Nishi Patel

National Director of Cardiac Imaging

Dr. Nishi Patel, M.D., is recognized as an innovative force in modern cardiovascular medicine, known for his clinical expertise, research acumen, and deep dedication to bringing advanced cardiac care to both metropolitan and rural communities. Currently, Dr. Patel serves as a leading specialist in Cardiovascular Medicine at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, where he leads efforts to improve outcomes for patients with complex heart disease, with a focus on advanced heart failure and cardiac critical care.

 Strong Educational and Training Background

Dr. Patel’s pursuit of a career in medicine began at Drexel University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2009. He continued his academic journey at Drexel University College of Medicine, graduating with his Doctor of Medicine in 2013. His formative medical years were marked by exceptional dedication and an early affinity for the challenges and intricacies of cardiovascular health.

After completing his undergraduate and medical education, Dr. Patel entered an internship and residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There, he refined his diagnostic and clinical skills and developed a passion for caring for patients with critical and complex needs. His interest in heart failure and transplantation led him to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, for subspecialty fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. These experiences exposed him to a wide array of lifesaving therapies, from mechanical circulatory support devices to heart transplantation and molecular cardiology.

Today, Dr. Patel holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Echocardiography, Cardiac CT, and Nuclear Cardiology—credentials that underscore his depth of knowledge and commitment to clinical excellence.

Clinical Practice: Advancing Local Access to Complex Care

At WellSpan York Hospital, Dr. Patel leads a high-acuity practice centered on the management of patients with severe and often life-threatening cardiac disease. His work includes the care of individuals dependent on advanced technologies like ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), Impella and LVAD devices, as well as those who require or have undergone heart transplantation. Dr. Patel’s mission is to ensure that such specialized treatments are not only available but also accessible within local communities, so that families can stay together and receive care close to home.

He was instrumental in establishing one of central Pennsylvania’s most comprehensive centers for the care of congestive heart failure. Dr. Patel’s vision encompasses every stage of patient care, from initial ICU management and surgical interventions to long-term disease prevention and rehabilitation. He has led initiatives to introduce new technologies into clinical practice, including the use of remote patient monitoring systems (such as CardioMEMS) and telemedicine consultations, which have measurably reduced hospital readmissions and improved the quality of life for patients with heart failure.

Nishi Patel is also developing an innovative survivors’ clinic for patients recovering from cardiogenic shock—a program that provides medical, psychological, and social support to patients after critical illness. Recognizing the emotional toll of sudden cardiac events, he introduced protocols for virtual and molecular autopsies for sudden death victims, enabling family members to understand their genetic risks and plan accordingly.

National Leadership: Bridging Gaps through Telemedicine

Dr. Patel’s leadership extends beyond his hospital and region. As National Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access Physicians/SOC Telemedicine (now Access TeleCare), he guides cardiac imaging programs for a telehealth group serving a wide range of rural hospitals nationwide. Through his leadership, advanced imaging modalities such as echocardiography and cardiac CT are now available in communities that would otherwise lack access, ensuring prompt and expert interpretation, as well as follow-up care.

Dr. Patel became an early advocate of telemedicine during his initial years as an internist and hospitalist. He saw firsthand the challenges faced by patients and hospitals in remote areas and recognized telemedicine as a transformative solution. Today, he is regarded as an innovator who brings subspecialty cardiac care to hospitals and clinics nationwide, empowering local physicians and improving patient outcomes on a large scale.

Research, Scholarship, and Education

Dr. Patel has built a reputation as a respected researcher and academic leader. Early in his career, he worked in Dr. Harpreet Singh’s lab, conducting foundational studies in heart failure using animal models and refining imaging protocols. Over time, he has authored numerous publications on advanced therapies and device management for heart failure and transplantation, as well as molecular and genetic approaches to sudden cardiac arrest.
His most recent research, supported by a Zoll Foundation Research Grant, explores the intersection of precision medicine, genomics, and cardiogenic shock. Dr. Patel’s work has been presented at top-tier national and international conferences, and he regularly contributes abstracts and articles to leading journals, including the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal.

In addition to research, Dr. Patel is a passionate educator. As Associate Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine, he mentors the next generation of medical professionals and delivers lectures on advanced cardiovascular topics. He has received the Drexel Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence and serves as Editor-in-Chief for Cardiology and Cardiac CT content at StatPearls, a central healthcare education platform. He also serves as a reviewer for journals such as the American Journal of Cardiology.
